Gustavie Thomas

The place of maternal princess goes to Julie’s daughter, Gustavie. She was born in November 1878 to Julie Burcard and Pierre Thomas. Gustavie lived a short, tender life. There is much we do not know.

We do know that Gustavie met and married a mulatto man by the name of Louis “Man” Caire on April 30, 1904. Louis’ father was a Frenchman named Jeancoeur Caire. His mother was a Creole woman of color from Edgard named Philaje Jean Lewis.

Gustavie and Louis had a single daughter. They named her Eunice. Tragically, Gustavie perished during childbirth at the age of twenty-seven. Unfortunately, this was a far too common occurrence in her day. She, too, was buried in St. John the Baptist Cemetery.
